Prenatal yoga is a 60 minute class built around a pregnant body, not adapted from a general class at the last minute. Everything is chosen with your changing centre of gravity, your growing belly and your energy levels in mind.
The focus is on creating space. Space in the hips and the ribcage, space for the baby, space for your own organs, and space in your head after a week of appointments and planning. You will build strength where you need it for the months ahead, release the places that carry the load, and spend real time on breath.
Classes are rolling. There is no fixed eight week block to sign up for and no waiting for the next course to start. You come when it works, at whatever week you are in.
We start seated, with breath and a check in on how the week has been. From there, gentle mobility for the spine, hips and shoulders, then standing work for legs and stamina, held longer and supported with blocks or a wall where useful.
Everything is offered with options. Some days you will want the stronger version. Some days you will want the floor and a cushion, and that is the right choice too.
We close with restorative shapes, props stacked so you are properly held, and a few minutes of deep rest. Most people leave calmer than they arrived, and looser through the lower back.
Anyone who is pregnant, from [week 12] onwards. No yoga experience needed. If you have never been on a mat before, this is a fine place to start, and if you have practised for years, there is plenty here to work with.
If your pregnancy is being medically monitored or you have been told to limit activity, check with your midwife or doctor first, then let your teacher know at the start of class.
Strength for carrying, and for the physical work of birth. Mobility in the hips and pelvis. Breathing tools you can actually use when things get intense. Relief for the lower back, ribs and shoulders. And an hour a week that belongs to you and the baby, with nothing else on the list.
There is also the room itself. You are surrounded by people at the same stage, some further along, some earlier. Questions get asked out loud. Numbers get swapped. A lot of friendships have started this way.
Sixty minutes. All props provided, including blocks, bands, balls, blankets and BBhugme pregnancy pillows. Wear something you can move in. Bring water. Classes run in [English]. Groups stay small, max 12 people.
